How to Host A Literary-Themed Party
Share
If you've read The Whisper in Wind, you already know about one of my favorite fictional nights of the year—the Library Benefit Banquet. Candlelit chandeliers, a six-tier cake shaped like a spiral bookcase, Raspberry Cordial straight out of Anne of Green Gables, guests dressed as their favorite literary characters... it's the kind of scene I dream up because, deep down, I wish I could walk right into it myself.
I know what it's like to write that kind of scene into existence, but how hard would it be to bring a bit of that magic into real life?
It turns out, hosting a literary-inspired dinner party is one of the simplest ways to gather the people you love around a table, swap favorite stories, and make an ordinary evening feel a little enchanted. You don't need a mansion, a live band, or a six-tier cake (although, no judgment if you go for it). You just need a good book, a little imagination, and a handful of friends who love to read as much as you do.

Here's how to plan one of your own:
1. Choose Your Literary Theme
The heart of any good book-themed party is a strong central idea to build around. You have two easy directions to choose from:
- A single beloved book or series. Think a Pride and Prejudice evening with Regency elegance and tea, or a cozy Anne of Green Gables gathering with puffed sleeves and homemade preserves.
- A genre or mood. If narrowing it down to one book feels impossible, lean into a broader theme instead—a cozy mystery night, a Regency-era soirée, or a small-town, homestyle meal surrounded by your found family.
Once you've settled on your theme, everything else—food, decor, invitations—will start falling into place.
2. Send Invitations That Set the Mood
Your invitation is the first little taste of magic your guests will experience, so have fun with it. A few easy ideas:
- Design your invite to look like a book cover.
- Roll it up like a scroll and tie it with ribbon for a historical or fantasy theme.
- Include a favorite quote from the book that inspired your evening.
- Ask guests to come dressed as a character, or simply in their favorite "reading night" attire.
3. Decorate With What You Already Have
Here's the good news: if you're a reader, you likely already own the best decorations for this kind of party—your bookshelf.
Stack books as centerpieces, tuck fairy lights between the pages of an open book, or lean a few favorite covers against vases and candles around the room. Add candlelight wherever you can; it's an easy way to bring that same soft, banquet-hall glow from The Whisper in Wind right into your own dining room.
4. Build a Menu Inspired by the Story
This is where the fun really begins. Literary dinner parties are at their best when the food nods to the book itself:
Hosting a Harry Potter night? Serve Butterbeer and treacle tart. Going with Jane Eyre or another classic? A simple caraway seed cake feels right at home.
Leaning into a cozy small-town romance theme? Think comfort food—a warm casserole, fresh-baked bread, and something sweet with cinnamon.
You don't need to recreate an entire feast. Even one or two thoughtful, book-inspired dishes will make the evening feel special.
Or go all out with a literary themed cookbook like this one: Jane Austen's Table: Recipes Inspired by the Works of Jane Austen
5. Add a Little Storytelling to the Evening
The best part of a literary dinner party isn't just the food or the decor—it's the conversation. A few easy ways to keep the storytelling going all night:
- Ask each guest to share the book that means the most to them, and why
- Put together a simple "two truths and a book" game using plot twists from favorite novels.
- Set out a jar of discussion questions for guests to pull from between courses.
6. Keep It Simple and Sincere
If there's one thing I hope you take from this, it's that a literary dinner party doesn't need to be elaborate to feel meaningful. Some of the coziest gatherings are simply a few close friends, a home-cooked meal, and a shared love of stories.
So light a few candles, pull a favorite novel off your shelf for inspiration, and invite the people you love to pull up a chair. However you set your table, I hope your evening feels every bit as magical as a night in Poppy Creek.
Happy hosting, friends!
