Hitchcock & Hayrides: Fall Movie Night Guide

How to Host Your Own Hitchcock & Hayrides Night

Some of my favorite scenes to write are the ones built entirely around gathering people together—a whole town settling onto blankets, sharing popcorn, watching the same flickering screen under the stars. That's exactly the feeling behind Hitchcock & Hayrides, the fall tradition from The Whisper in Wind that's become one of my favorite fictional nights in all of Poppy Creek.
There's something timeless about pairing an old classic film with the simple pleasures of a crisp autumn evening—string lights, hot cocoa, the crunch of hay underfoot. It's cozy without being complicated, which might be exactly why I love it so much.
If you caught this week's newsletter, you already have the basics for recreating it at home. Consider this post your fuller guide—a few extra details to help you set the mood just right.

Set the Scene
The atmosphere is really what makes this night feel special, and thankfully, it doesn't take much. String some outdoor lights around your patio or yard, gather every blanket and pillow in the house, and if the weather allows, take the whole setup outside. No backyard? A cozy living room with the lights dimmed low works just as well.
A small tip: warm-toned string lights (amber or soft white, rather than cool white) go a long way in creating that golden, old-Hollywood glow.
Pick a Classic
Old Hitchcock films bring an instant sense of nostalgia and charm—To Catch a Thief and Rear Window are both lovely choices if you're looking for that same old-world elegance featured in the book. If suspense isn't quite your speed, any black-and-white classic will do the trick; it's really the mood you're after more than the specific title.
Stock the Snack Station
Popcorn and hot chocolate are must-haves. For a little extra flair, set out a small toppings bar—caramel drizzle, cinnamon sugar, mini marshmallows, or a sprinkle of sea salt. It turns a simple snack into part of the experience. S'mores are another fun option if you have a firepit.
Take a "Hayride"
You don't need horses (or even hay, really) to capture this part of the tradition. A leisurely golf cart ride, a wagon pulled around the yard, or even a flashlight walk under the stars can bring the same sense of adventure, especially for kids. The goal isn't authenticity—it's the feeling of stepping outside the ordinary for a little while.
Add a Little Glow
Lanterns, string lights, or a small firepit all add warmth to the evening and make for beautiful photos, if you're the type to capture the night with a camera. Even a few candles in glass jars scattered around your seating area can make a big difference.
Make It Your Own
However you put your evening together, the heart of Hitchcock & Hayrides isn't really about recreating the book scene exactly—it's about carving out an evening to slow down, gather close, and enjoy a little old-fashioned magic together.
