Autumn Activity Checklist
Share
I have a confession: I get a little too excited about fall. The second the temperature dips even slightly, I'm digging through the closet for sweaters I don't need yet and eyeing every pumpkin display like they're begging to come home with me.
I think it's because fall doesn't ask much of us. It simply invites us to slow down and savor the little things—lighting a scented candle, snuggling beneath a soft blanket with a good book, and lingering a little longer over my morning coffee while the sun rises. There's a certain coziness built right into the season itself.
If you saw the Autumn Activity Checklist in this week's newsletter, consider this its companion piece—a closer look at why each item made the list, along with a few extra ideas to make the season feel even fuller.

Visit a Local Pumpkin Patch or Apple Orchard
There's something so satisfying about picking your own food straight from the source. Even if you don't need a single pumpkin or apple, it's lovely to simply be outside—the scent of hay, the crunch of gravel underfoot, the way kids (and adults, let's be honest) light up over the perfect pumpkin. If you have an orchard or pumpkin patch nearby, try going on a weekday morning when it's quieter and you can take your time.
Bake Something With Cinnamon or Pumpkin Spice
Few things say "fall has arrived" quite like the smell of cinnamon drifting through the house. If you're looking for a place to start, my blog archives have a few tried-and-true recipes worth revisiting — Maggie's Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Rolls and Sadie's Spiced Apple Cider both make the whole house smell like a page out of Poppy Creek.
Take a Walk and Collect Pretty Fallen Leaves
This one sounds simple, almost too simple to matter, but it's become one of my favorite fall rituals. There's something so lovely about a slow walk with no particular destination, especially when the trees are putting on their best show of the year. Press a few favorite leaves between the pages of a book, and you'll have a sweet little keepsake of the season.
Light a Fall-Scented Candle
Small, but mighty. A candle can turn an ordinary evening into a cozy experience almost instantly. I'm partial to anything with notes of cinnamon, clove, or baked desserts—the kind of scent that makes a house feel like it's expecting company, even if it's just you curled up with a book.
Curl Up With a Cozy Blanket and a Good Book
This one probably doesn't need much explaining coming from me. Fall has a way of making reading feel like an event rather than an afterthought—pair it with a soft blanket, a warm drink, and maybe a candle from the tip above, and you've got the makings of a perfect afternoon. Make it even better with this book!
Attend a Local Fall Festival or Farmers Market
Small-town festivals hold a special kind of magic—the kind I try to capture in Poppy Creek every chance I get. If your town has a fall festival or farmers market, it's worth carving out an afternoon for it. You'll likely come home with more than you planned (a jar of honey, a new favorite candle, maybe a handmade treasure), and that's half the fun.
Make a Pot of Soup or Chili to Share
Cooking for others has a way of turning an ordinary evening into something extra special. A big pot of soup or chili is one of the easiest ways to gather people around a table, and there's rarely a bad time to invite a neighbor or friend over to share it.
Decorate Your Porch With Mums or Pumpkins
A simple, small act, but it does wonders for how a whole street feels. There's something communal about porches dressed for the season—like everyone is celebrating together.
Start a Gratitude Journal
Fall has a natural rhythm of slowing down and looking inward, which makes it the perfect time to start (or return to) a gratitude practice. It doesn't need to be elaborate—even a sticky note or the notes app on your phone works. The goal isn't perfection; it's just pausing long enough to notice our blessings, big and small.
Call or Visit Someone You Love
Let the slower fall season be a time of connection, whether you're deepening current relationships or rekindling old ones. A quick phone call, a cup of coffee together, a handwritten note—small gestures tend to mean more than we realize.
Gentle Reminder:
You don't need to check off every item on the list to have a meaningful fall season. Pick one or two that speak to you, and let the rest of the season unfold at its own pace. That's really the heart of it all—not necessarily doing more, but noticing more.
Wishing you a season full of warmth, good books, and cozy small-town moments.
Blessings & Blooms,
Rachael
